Help us welcome 19 new full time Cosmetology students in our next intake November 15th!

All SSC students must complete 1600 hrs of training to be eligible for graduation and state board license exam. Training will primarily focus on Cosmetology theory and hands-on practice and Employability Skills. The school is run like an actual salon. Lectures begin in the morning followed by hands-on training out on the floor with mannequins, models, and or clients.

Classes are 40 hours per week for 10 months for full time students and 20 hours per week for 20 months for half time students. Full time classes begin at 8:00-am -4:30pm. We require all students to have 75% or more on all exams and homework assignments and 90% attendance rating to be eligible for graduation. We expect students to make the necessary arrangements in their busy schedules to maintain a passing grade and excellent attendance.

Shoreline School of Cosmetology provides you with training in the areas of hair care, skin care,

Santa Cruz County Office of Education Regional Occupational Program (ROP),

Shoreline School of Cosmetology

offers a high school seniors-only Cosmetology class.

The high school program enables students to

complete the first 160-200 hours of the Adult Cosmetology Program.

If you are in 11^th grade and are interested, you must attend an informational Forum at

Requirements for entrance into Cosmetology program

· Attend a Forum.

· Return the Contact Sheet you receive from Shoreline School of Cosmetology to your

ROP Counselor after you attend a Forum.

· Maintain a 2.0 GPA.

· Complete high school math and science per-requisites

(varies by school but usually it’s Algebra I

plus two science classes, at least one Life Science and one Physical Science)

by end of your senior year.

· Maintain good attendance during high school.

· Do well at your Shoreline School of Cosmetology interview before your senior year.

Additional information

· The entire Cosmetology Program consists of 1600 hours and includes Level I,

the high school program up to

160-200 hours; Level II, 200 – 1000 of skill training; and Mock Board 1000+ hours

(students start seeing clients as part of the Salon).

· You will be graded on a Pass/Fail basis and will receive progress reports.

You will also earn a percentage grade.

· Class is held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4:00 - 6:00 PM at the

Shoreline School of Cosmetology.

· You can earn 5 high school credits each semester.

Gretchen has over 12 years of experience in the industry with over 6 years of experience as an educator for Paul Mitchell. Gretchen will be delivering our freshman level curriculum at Shoreline School of Cosmetology and will assist with client services on the floor with our student stylists. Gretchen has an in depth skill set with specific emphasis in haircutting, thermal styling, and Paul Mitchell color design and application. As an educator Gretchen is often regarded as highly engaging and knowledgeable with a vibrant flare all her own.

Let’s Celebrate All Beautiful Career Paths

March is Women’s History Month and an opportunity to celebrate how far women have come. While we hear a lot about how women are underrepresented in math and science professions, we’re unlikely to hear much about women’s achievements in beauty career fields.

Yet over the past century, beauty career paths have created thousands of successful career paths and businesses. From product developers and beauty editors to backstage stylists, day spa owners and salon professionals, it’s estimated that more than 820,000 people work in the beauty industry today. Even more remarkable is that these jobs are projected to grow.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook 2010-11 Edition– projects that careers in cosmetology will grow much faster than the national average. Skincare (esthetics) careers are projected to grow 38 percent through 2018 with overall cosmetology jobs growing about 20 percent for the period 2008 through 2018. These jobs aren’t just in big cities, but in virtually every American town.

Perhaps the most alluring part of a career in beauty is its staying power. Consider:

· Jobs in the beauty industry are not subject to off-shoring – at least until someone invents a way to get a haircut from a call center

· Jobs in the beauty industry are not likely to be replaced with technology – until a computer can provide a haircut and color

· Jobs in the beauty industry provide what many young people are wanting more of today – life/work balance and the opportunity to create a schedule that lets people do what they love while also finding time for their loved ones. For this reason alone, beauty careers are an attractive choice for mothers and caregivers

Perhaps the most beautiful thing about the beauty industry is its commitment to helping others. Each year, salons, beauty schools and manufacturers contribute thousands of hours of service to programs benefiting their community.

Yes, we need careers in math, science and emerging technology fields. But let’s not forget about the opportunities available to those who want to make the world a more beautiful place.

Shoreline School of Cosmetology is proud to announce on-going Technical Hands-on Education demonstrations for 2011 called THE Series. During THE Series we've asked salon experts in the community to come in and provide demonstrations and hands-on coaching to students. The goal is to build on our existing curriculum and provide essential employable skills training for our students. We expect THE Series to increase student awareness and learning through informative and creative presentations, expert coaching, and experiential hands-on training.

Pablo serves in many areas of his profession. He is a hairstylist, a salon owner at Kepare Salon in Capitola and a tutor helping people new to the profession. He is an industry advisory committee member for Shoreline School of Cosmetology and a coach to other salon owners and stylists. His next venture is to become a Pureology Pure Artist educator. Pablo brings a lot of knowledge, experience, intuition, and artistry to what he does.

Pablo will be coaching students during client services each Friday from 11:00am-1:00pm.

High School Video Production Contest

Shoreline School of Cosmetology invites your participation in a video contest highlighting the school, its services, and student learning. The contest is open to high school students enrolled or who have been enrolled in video production classes. Contestants are invited to submit videos or slide shows in a Microsoft compatible format which can be played through a MS PC compatible computer or device. Entries will be judged on specific criteria outlined below and judged by a panel of judges assembled by the school. There will be three cash prizes, 1st place $100, 2nd place $75, 3rd place $50. All participants will receive a certificate good for one free cosmetology service. All entries become the property of Shoreline School of Cosmetology and may be used for educational or promotional purposes.

Video/slide show Criteria

1. Presentation should tell the story of Shoreline School of Cosmetology’s educational programs, services, and/or student learning experience. One or more aspect of the school can be highlighted (50 points)
2. Be no less than 2 minutes or more than 5-7 minutes long (10 points)
3. Can include history of the Cosmetology profession (10 bonus points)
4. Be positive portrayal of the program and services of the school (50 points)
5. Can include interviews of staff, students, graduates, and clients of the school (20 points)
6. Include a title and credit frame (5 points)
7. Be in a Microsoft compatible format (100 points)
8. Must be on a DVD, CD or flash drive.

Judging

A panel of judges will be assembled by the Shoreline School of Cosmetology that has video industry experience. Cash prizes will be awarded for 1st through 3rd places of $100, $75, and $50. All participants will receive a certificate for one free cosmetology services at the school. The certificate for services will be emailed to each participant at the end of the contest. Cash awards will be presented to the students in person either at the cosmetology school or at their high school.

Submission information

1. All submissions must be received not later than April 4th at Shoreline School of Cosmetology, 1550 41st Ave Capitola, CA 95010. Entries received after that date will not be considered.
2. Please submit three labeled copies of each entry.
3. Entries are limited to one submission per group or individual.
4. Teams or group of students are allowed and will share in the cash prize.
5. On a separate document, clearly identifying the contestants name and contact information on the submission. Please include an e-mail contact.
6. List the name of the high school the contestant attends and the name of the teacher and the semester attended video production class. The contest is not open to high school graduates, only students’ currently enrolled in high school.
7. All entries will become the property of Shoreline School of Cosmetology and may be used for training or promotional purposes on the school’s website, presentations, or advertising.
8. Results of the contest will be posted on the schools website and the winners will be notified not later than May 4th 2011.

Shoreline School of Cosmetology was the proud beneficiary of the Women's Council of Realtors 4th Annual Spring Fashion Show at the Coconut Grove April 19, 2010.

Former student and now proud graduate Tanya Smith gave a heart warming speech on her experiences at Shoreline School of Cosmetology and how her training had impacted her life.

Celebrating Our Graduates!

Our Cosmetology Program at Shoreline School of Cosmetology prepares student for competitive positions in the cosmetology industry. The curriculum is covered five days a week for a 10 month period to meet the State of California cosmetology license exam requirements. Classes are conducted by a board licensed cosmetology instructor. Students learn important basics during thier freshmen class with a text book, work book, and hands on practice.

Graduates are to complete all curriculum assignments, earn a passing grade on required exams, and maintain an overall attendance of 90% or better. The students's goal is to complete 1600 clock hours of Cosmetology training and pass the California State BoardExam to obtain licensure. Successful graduates will be awarded a Certificate of Completion and will be eligible for placement assistance.

Lead instuctor Bev Nigro and Regional Occupation Program (ROP) Director Bryan Wall and Assistant Director Mark Hodges present the certificates of completion to graduates.
